Free car parking will be rolled out across Cannock in the run-up to Christmas in a bid to boost seasonal trade in the town.

The privately-owned 60-space car park at High Green Court will be free from noon on all four Saturdays in December up to and including Christmas Eve.

Cannock Chase Council bosses have already decided to sacrifice up to £26,000 in order to help beleaguered shopkeepers by providing free parking at the sites the authority owns in the town on the two Saturdays prior to December 25.

For the past four years car parking charges in Cannock and Rugeley have either been dropped altogether or a minimal charge brought in.

A request from Rugeley Traders Association to increase the perk to cover more days has been turned down.
