Smethwick bar in licence dispute

Firefighters and police are opposing plans to reopen a Sandwell pub, closed down as a fire hazard.

Gills Bar and Restaurant, in Smethwick, was forced to shut back in June, after defects including a faulty alarm system and inadequate fire escapes were exposed.

Now Mr Ajay Balu has applied for a licence that will allow him to relaunch the Rolfe Street venue, offering alcohol and late night dancing.
