Online retailer Amazon has advertised 900 vacancies at its new processing centre in Staffordshire.

Job seekers are being invited to apply to work at the new unit in Rugeley, processing orders and providing customer service.

Amazon announced it would be moving into a new 700,000sq ft building at Towers Business Park, Rugeley in July this year.

Cannock Chase Council's economic development leader is encouraging people living in the area to take up the employment opportunity while it is on offer.

Councillor Gordon Alcott said: "This represents a fantastic opportunity for the people of Rugeley and Cannock; there are literally hundreds of jobs available right on their doorstep.

"Amazon is a truly global organisation and I am positive that we have the skill base here in our community to fill these roles in a world leading company.

"For the district this is obviously a big boost and we hope that as many people as possible will take up this opportunity with both hands and apply for these vacancies.

The council will continue to work with Amazon, their recruitment agents Randstad, Job Centre Plus and training providers to ensure that local unemployed people are also considered for the new posts."

Towers Business Park is the site of the former Lea Hall Colliery and Amazon's unit has lain empty since it was built three years ago.

The Towers Business Park site was started in 1991 by Staffordshire County Council and various scheme partners, and completed in 2000.

The Amazon unit was built by developer Gazeley in 2008 but has remained empty as a result of the economic downturn. The Rugeley bypass was built in 2007 as part of the regeneration.

Arthur Valdez – vice-president of operations at Ama zon.co.uk – said: "The centre at Rugeley will play an important role in fulfilling orders for customers in the UK, Europe and all over the world." Apply for an Amazon job on 0844 257 8293.
