A Staffordshire community centre can look forward to welcoming users back after a £50,000 renovation project.

St Luke's Community Centre, in Cannock town centre, can offer a warm, safe environment again for its clubs and group.

Ibstock Cory Environmental Trust (ICET) donated £15,000 and Cory Environmental Trust Britain (CETB) also gave £10,000. Staffordshire Environmental Fund contributed £25,000, the extensive renovation work that helped revive this ailing centre was made possible.

St Luke's has seen major changes in the last year, including new toilets, increased office space, storage and a new reception area, offering a welcoming gateway to the Centre.

Prior to improvements, St Luke's had a number of shortfalls, as the building was in dire need of modernisation.

Many community members were hindered by the poor facilities, with access and restrictions making it difficult for them to participate in meetings.

Rev Peter Hart, the project board lead, along with George Joynson, project manager, were responsible for the tireless search in funding this project. They are delighted that all the hard work has now paid off.

Mr Joynson said: "The project has taken a lot longer than anticipated but is well worth the wait.

"Now a great place to come and a fitting tribute to the determination of those involved, St Luke's can embrace all its community members.

"Thank you ICET, CETB and Staffordshire Environmental for helping to make this happen. With praise also to the architects, Brownhill Hayward Brown of Lichfield, who proved so incredibly helpful throughout this time."

The work to upgrade St Luke's and make it fit for purpose will benefit groups including brownies and guides, slimming groups, drama clubs and a men's breakfast club, all of whom use the centre.

Mr Joyson added: "Now, St Luke's Community Centre can expand and support initiatives, secure in the knowledge this building is now well equipped to cater to everyone's needs."

The official opening by Cannock Chase MP Tony Wright was taking place today.
