A crackdown by Cannock Chase Council on dog fouling has resulted in the issuing of 29 fixed-penalty notices to owners.

In response to residents' concerns, a number of high visibility and more low-key patrols were carried out over the last few weeks.

Hotspots across the district were targeted, particularly open spaces like Etching Hill playing fields in Rugeley and Mill Green Local Nature Reserve in Cannock.

Residential streets and areas outside schools were visited by the patrols. Dog owners who were seen not clearing up after their pets were issued with a notice and will have to pay £50.

The council's head of environmental health Steve Shilvock said: "It's time for dog owners who fail to clear up after their pets to realise that we will not tolerate their behaviour. We are determined to reduce dog fouling in the district and to improve the environment for residents and visitors.

"Dog fouling looks terrible and is a genuine public health hazard. I urge all dog walkers to clean up after their pet. If they don't, there is a real chance they could be hit with a fixed-penalty notice."

Improving the cleanliness of the local environment is one of the district council's top priorities.

Mr Shilvock said everyone should be aware that it was their responsibility to clean up after their dog. Dog fouling that was not cleared away could pose serious health risks, especially to young children.

The council uses all possible means to identify and deal with dog fouling offenders and regular patrols are carried out across the district.
