The new Poundland store set to open in Cannock town centre will create 30 new jobs, it has been revealed.

They will go some way to replacing the 45 posts lost when Woolworths closed in January.

Woolworths previously occupied the building in Market Place that will become Poundland and former Woolies staff are being encouraged to apply.

Bosses have yet to confirm an opening date for the store later this month but will be marking the occasion by inviting a well-known TV star, whose identity they are keeping under wraps, to welcome its first customers and putting on a family fun day.

Poundland's trading director David Coxon, said: "We're absolutely thrilled to be opening a store in Cannock, creating jobs and great shopping opportunities. I'm sure the savvy shoppers in the area will be delighted by the amazing value that Poundland offers."

"Cannock is a great town and we believe Poundland can help people through the recession by offering quality items at an affordable price."

Poundland, which is flourishing during the recession, also recently opened a store in Stafford's Guildhall Shopping Centre, employing 13 former Woolies staff made unemployed when the Gaolgate Street store closed.
