A new youth club for teenagers aimed at reducing anti-social behaviour and providing a safe social gathering point has been launched in Cannock Chase.

The club, for 13 to 17-year-olds, at Hayes Green Community Centre, Heath Way, Heath Hayes, is running initially as a four-week pilot scheme on Thursdays from 7-9pm. Around 20 youngsters attended the first evening this week. Councillor John Jillings said: "If it proves a success it will be extended and I am hopeful that will be the case."

Councillor Jillings added:"At the end of the evening we were telling those who came along to spread the word.

"This is an excellent opportunity for the young people of the area to benefit from a safe, welcoming environment where they can have fun and meet new friends."

The inaugural session was attended by a local police community support officer, County Councillor John Rowley, district councillors John and Ann Bernard and featured a karate demonstration by David Jillings.

Next Thursday will see dance classes and nail art as well as more informal entertainments.

Councillor Jillings said he is also keen for older teenagers to get involved in supervising the younger ones with the possibility to train as youth club leaders.

And any suggestions from those using the club for future activities they will be considered.

Ray Smythe, Heath Hayes and Wimblebury Parish Council clerk, who took along snacks and drinks for the youngsters, said: "It is a great idea and the street wardens are to be commended for this initiative that is welcomed in the area with the highest number of teenagers in Staffordshire.

"But if a youth club could be viable in the long term, the wardens cannot be expected to lose man hours."
