The plans for the supermarket in Heath Way were given the go-ahead by Cannock Chase Council last night.
Eoin Dardis, corporate affairs manager for Tesco, told the meeting extra retail space would be created by the extension and in turn more staff would be needed.
There will be 26 full-time positions created and 38 part-time ones at the new look supermarket.
He said: "I think this will be really good news for the community and the local economy because we are looking to create over 60 new jobs.
"The store has been open for 20 years now and has remained untouched. We feel it is the right time to make improvements and to create extra retail space for our customers."
Councillor Doris Grice welcomed the move saying the creation of extra jobs would be excellent for the economy.
She said: "Tesco are a very good company and the supermarket is well used there. They need to expand due to the popularity of it. It is going to create over 60 new jobs so it is great news. It is a real boost for the area."
The extension, which will add 846 sq metres to the current 3,292 sq metres of retail floorspace and 75 new car parking spaces.
