Hundreds of trains through the Black Country and Staffordshire will not run on Sunday after drivers and conductors refused to work.

Staff at London Midland have been told they will no longer receive bonus payments for working Sunday shifts, which are voluntary, and have decided not to put themselves on the rota.

The train company runs local services between Birmingham and Liverpool, through Wolverhampton, as well as services through the Black Country to Birmingham Snow Hill and the Chase Line through Staffordshire.

It said the problem would only affect services this Sunday. There are around 500 services with two-thirds of them passing through the Black Country and Staffordshire.

Director of operations and safety Andy Thomas said: "For the majority of London Midland staff, working on Sundays is voluntary. This weekend a large number of onboard staff have failed to volunteer, resulting in a shortfall in staff and the cancellation of services.

"All our services will be running again from Monday 7 September."
