Youth services in Cannock Chase district could get a much-needed shot in the arm thanks to the change in the county's administration, according to a leading councillor.

Mick Grocott, cabinet member for young people, is hopeful appeals will be met more favourably by the Conservative regime than under Labour. The Liberal Democrat/Tory coalition on the district council will now be seeking more investment, especially in deprivation hotspots such as Chads- moor in Cannock, the Springfields estate in Rugeley and nearby Brereton and Ravenhill.

Councillor Grocott said: "We have worked very hard in this district but have not always got help from county youth services.

"There is a new regime this year and I hope we will get more backing as a result.

"I am optimistic that during the next 12 months there will be more activities available through Staffordshire Youth Services."

Councillor Grocott said that while efforts would be made to improve the situation across the district, there were some areas more in need than others.

He said: "There are hotspots and we will target those."

Councillor Grocott said there would be meetings within the district authority to put together a "wish list" before approaching the county council to see what assistance it can provide.

The district's summer play scheme Chase It! has been nominated for a national award, while new youth clubs are starting up in Heath Hayes and Rugeley.

Heath Hayes and Wimblebury East councillor John Jillings said: "The parish council has donated the parish hall and our street wardens have put a lot of effort in to make sure it gets off the ground."

Volunteers are currently being sought for the 'Chill Out Centre' at the former squash courts on Taylors Lane, Rugeley. Anyone interested should call 01785 234317.
