Accident fear over potholes

Large potholes have emerged in a Cannock road prompting fears that the uneven surface could cause an accident.

Urgent work is being demanded in Nicholls Way at the junction of Wimblebury Road, Heath Hayes, amid concern that motorists and pedestrians could be hurt.

Staffordshire Highways bosses have admitted they are aware of the problem and improvement work is being planned, although no firm date is in place.

Former district councillor Chris Collis said the road surface was very uneven, heavily potholed and in places is covered with a deep layer of loose grit.

He said that even at slow speed, drivers reported told him how they skidded into the main Wimblebury Road when braking on the chippings.

Mr Collis said there were also worries over people with mobility problems tackling the uneven road.

"I have become increasingly anxious about the safety of residents a number of whom are elderly and unsteady on their feet," he said.

County Council spokeswoman Michelle Hunt said: "We are aware of the situation in Nicholls Way near the junction with Wimblebury Road and improvement work is scheduled to be carried out there.

"Rather than simply filling in the potholes, the team at Staffordshire Highways will be resurfacing an area of the carriageway which will provide a more long term solution."
