Boy racers are using a supermarket car park in Chasetown to challenge each other and perform outrageous manoeuvres.

Residents say the noise is horrendous from high performance cars who race and perform wheel spins on the Tesco Metro car park in High Street.

They fear the problems will increase when the supermarket is turned into a Tesco Express within the next month increasing opening hours from 9pm until 11pm.

County councillor Paul Atkins said he was hoping Tesco would be installing a barrier on the car park to stop the boy racers getting on.

He said: "People living close to the Tesco Metro are absolutely sick and tired of the noise from these boy racers who use it to race and perform tricks.

"They do fear the problems are just going to escalate when the Tesco Express opens. There was a barrier on the car park which was removed for safety reasons. This has caused the problem to escalate.

"These boy racers have been racing each other on the car park and perform various stunts such as wheel spins. It has really been driving the residents mad.

"I hope Tesco take a social responsibility and put a barrier on there."

Tesco today said they would be taking action against the boy racers by installing a barrier to lock them out of the car park after hours. This would be installed when the Tesco Express is introduced.

Juliette Bishop, spokeswoman for Tesco, said: "We are currently in the process of turning the Tesco Metro into a Tesco Express and this should be completed by the end of September.

"We are aware of the problem with boy racers. We removed a barrier on the car park for safety reasons but we will installing a new when the work is completed."
