An off-duty nurse saved a 15-year-old girl whose leg was impaled on the handlebars of her bike when it collided with a taxi in Cannock.
The girl was knocked off her mountain bike in Chadsmoor, yesterday.
Witnesses said the taxi driver, 42, was pulling out of the junction of Cemetery Road and Pye Green Road, when the girl cycled in front of him at 6.45pm.
The female nurse, who was passing, helped stem blood which was pouring from a wound in her leg and local workers provided blankets and towels.
The nurse carried out lifesaving first aid treatment until paramedics arrived and treated her before the County Air Ambulance took her to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.
Murray MacGregor, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said: "Although the crews are confident that she will pull through, had she not received treatment when she did, the situation could have been considerably more serious."
