Shoppers in Stafford, Cannock and Rugeley are being warned to be on their guard following a spate of purse snatches.

Officers from Chase division of Staffordshire Police are particularly urging elderly women to make sure their purses and other valuables are kept secure.

Around 15 purse thefts have been reported across the area in the last month. People using cash machines, shops and supermarkets and post offices to collect pensions have been targeted.

Inspector Maurice Annett said: "We'd recommend the public take the following basic crime prevention advice, to make sure their property remains safe and secure:

"Ensure you're aware of who is around you when you're shopping, particularly when visiting busy shops and supermarkets where your attention is drawn to the goods you're looking to buy.

"Make sure you keep a close watch on bags, purses, wallets and other valuables.

"When using a cash machine, always make sure you cover up the keypad when entering your PIN number. Don't be distracted by anyone talking to you or suggesting you've dropped something.

"Consider changing your PIN number to one that you easily recognise – rather than writing down the number on a piece of paper.

"Where possible, keep bank cards and cash in separate purses or wallets."
