A Staffordshire man who strangled his partner and then tried to slit his own throat after mistakenly believing he had killed her has been jailed for a minimum of six years.

John Warner only survived because victim Paula Glanville regained consciousness and summoned medical help, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Sentencing him to an indeterminate term of imprisonment for public protection, Mrs Justice Macur said she was satisfied Warner made a genuine attempt to take his own life.

The 50-year-old, of Birch Lane, Rugeley, was convicted of attempting to murder Mrs Glanville by a jury at Stafford Crown Court in December.

The trial was told Warner tried to kill her last July after accusing her of making advances towards another man. Mrs Glanville has recovered from her injuries but still has flashbacks.

Passing sentence, Mrs Justice Macur said: "It's clear to me that you were obsessed with her, besotted with her and yet possessive of her." Warner must serve at least six years in prison, including time spent on remand, before he can be considered for parole.
