In Pictures: Talented young photographers put lockdown into focus in competition
Finalists announced for competition.
The winners of the Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 competition have been announced at an online ceremony.
Wolverhampton Photographic Society's annual competition was moved due to the pandemic.
Rhianna Jones and Mya Ghera took home the title of Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020.
Rhianna, aged 18, from Wolverhampton College won the Senior Prize with 'Loneliness' (above), winning the category My Lockdown, and she also won the Creative Prize with 'A Splash of Colours'.
Mya, aged 14, from Wolverhampton Grammar School won the Junior Prize with her picture entitled 'We are all Mad Here' which she entered in the Creative Category.
Wolverhampton Grammar School won the School and College Trophy overall.
The competition was judged by Tim Thursfield, group chief photographer at Midland News Association, Carol Thompson, senior curator at Wolverhampton Arts and Culture and international photographer Bob Moore.
Carol Bailey, chair of Wolverhampton Photographic Society, said: “Despite the obvious restrictions that Covid has meant for students and teachers, we still had almost 120 entries.
"There has been an incredible level of high quality images from the young people of Wolverhampton, and all those who entered should be very proud of themselves.”
Carol, along with Rob Cowell and Andy Burton, also from Wolverhampton Photographic Society, have been running this competition for five years and new members are welcome to join.
Rob Cowell, who takes over from Carol Bailey as chair in May this year, added: “Once again, we have seen an excellent standard of photographs and the perspective of young people is inspiring.
"Photography is in safe hands with the young people of Wolverhampton."
