Wolverhampton Mayor to host online family quiz for all
A mayor is preparing to continue the tradition of holding a fundraising quiz night – and this year everyone is invited.
Money is raised for good causes each year by holding a quiz in the mayor's parlour in Wolverhampton.
Coronavirus restrictions have ruled that out for this year, so the quiz has gone online instead.
That means everyone can take part from the comfort of their own home.
Mayor of Wolverhampton Claire Darke has tasked a number of local celebrities to come up with sets of questions.
They will be posted on social media on Thursday and people are being invited to have a go.
There will be no prizes on offer this year. Instead, Councillor Darke hopes to tap into the craze for fun family quizzes that has established itself through the lockdown.
The questions will be revealed on Thursday – and the Express & Star will also feature a selection for its weekly Pub Quiz on Friday.
The mayor hopes money can be raised for her charities by people leaving a small donation in return.
She said: "My role of mayor can be serious business representing the city to its citizens and all around the world.
"But as the winter nights creep in, it doesn’t mean we have to stop having fun. Over the past few months, an excellent team alongside myself have been contacting Wolverhampton’s finest entertainers to take part in the annual charity quiz. This year, rather than gathering in the Mayoral Parlour, we are making the quiz free and available to all online."
Celebrities submitting questions for the quiz include Wolverhampton’s own Anita and Hugh Porter as well sports presenter Suzi Perry. Experts from Wolverhampton University have submitted science questions and others contrtibuting include MPs Pat McFadden and Stuart Anderson, Jane Stevenson and West Midlands Mayor Andy Street.
The mayor added: "The Grand Theatre with stars of Film and Television including Frances Barber and Liz Carr also make an appearance in the quiz discussing famous friends and detectives. And musician Goldie is asking much he would be worth if he was worth his weight in gold!
"We have also managed to get a special appearance from Jay of Jay’s Virtual Pub Quiz, which became something of a YouTube sensation during Lockdown."
The quiz is free and there is also a free to enter raffle with prizes to win. The star prize will be the chance to win a mini wolf from the Wolves in Wolves sculpture trail signed by Liam Payne.
You can donate to the Mayor’s Charity by texting the word “mayorsquiz”, followed by a space, then the amount of your donation to 70085. The Mayoral Quiz will be held on Thursday at 7.30pm on the council's Wolverhampton Today Facebook page and there will also be a link on expressandstar.com.
