Cheers! More young drinkers sought by Wolverhampton Camra
Cheers! More young drinkers are being sought to enjoy the taste of real ale by joining a Camra branch club.
Wolverhampton Camra Young Members meets at the Dog and Doublet in the city centre on the third Thursday of every month.
The nine-year-old branch has, however, struggled for numbers of late, attracting on average five people.
The group is for people aged 30 and under – however the chairman, Karen Williams, is aged 36.
Ms Williams, who lives in Wolverhampton, said: "We want to try and get more people involved.
"We want to encourage them to try something different that has not got so many chemicals in but instead has heart and passion.
"It's a great socially too, people can make new friends.
"We know its difficult to get people here after work but its a great atmosphere and we go on trips and hold quizzes.
“I’d ask people to go because it is a great organisation and a good way to meet friends and enjoy good ale.
"It is a good way to promote the breweries too.
"The past few years we have had people from universities and young business people get involved - it is open to anyone."
Wolverhampton CAMRA secretary John Nightingale said: “We had many members when the group first started, but recently numbers have dwindled.”
He added: “I don’t think it is to do with young people disliking ale, I think a mix of ages like ale.”
The group next meets at Dog and Doublet on June 15. On July 20, the group is organising a tour of Tettenhall’s pubs.
Membership for those under 25 is £26 and also comes with Wetherspoons vouchers.
CAMRA was founded by a few real ale enthusiasts in 1971, when the traditional rich-flavoured ales, still fermenting in the casks from which they were served, were being replaced by brewers producing beers with less demanding production and storing techniques.
