Walsall Pride cancelled this year amid uncertainty over coronavirus

It was set to return for its ninth year on August 29 – bringing a range of stall-holders and colours.

But now organisers of the event have been left "heartbroken" after they were forced to cancel it completely and instead focus their efforts on next year's event.

A statement said: "It is with great sadness and regret that we have to announce this year’s Walsall Pride, which was due to take place on August 29, has been cancelled.

"The continued uncertainty regarding Covid-19 means that it has become impossible to continue planning for this year’s event.

"Stallholders and some suppliers have understandably started to drop out and the lack of sponsorship deals also means we were unable to deliver an event we would be proud of.

"And it is not clear how long the current situation will go on for.

"Ultimately the health and safety of the public and our team of volunteers is our first priority and we put this before anything else.

"As much as we would like to carry on with our event it just isn’t viable at this time and know you will all understand why we have made this decision.

"We know that this news will be of huge disappointment to a lot of people and will be a huge loss for Walsall town centre with the visitors that pride attract each year with our relaxed, welcoming and inclusive atmosphere."

The 10th anniversary event will be held on August 28 next year.

"We would like to thank everyone for the support we have had from the community of Walsall," they added.
