Man dies and woman taken to hospital as road closed for 11 hours following crash in Staffordshire

A road has been closed for 11 hours overnight following a serious crash in Staffordshire.

A man has died and a woman taken to hospital for serious injuries following a serious crash in Tamworth on Wednesday night.

Emergency services rushed to the scene of the A5 near Castle, following reports of a serious collision on the road at around 7.16pm.

West Midlands Ambulance Service dispatched two ambulances, a paramedic officers, a MERIT trauma doctor, critical care paramedic and the Midlands Air Ambulance Critical Care Car from Cosford to the scene.

On arrival, crews discovered a lorry and two pedestrians who had been involved in a collision. 

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "On arrival, crews found a lorry and two pedestrians had been involved in a collision.

“A man was receiving basic life support and ambulance crews immediately took over to administer advanced life support.

“Sadly, it quickly became clear that he could not be saved and was confirmed deceased at the scene.

“A woman was treated by medics for serious, but not life-threatening, injuries and conveyed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.”

The road remains closed as of 9am on Thursday morning.

National Highways West Midlands said: "The #A5 is CLOSED in both directions between #B5440 near #MarlboroughWay and #A51 near #VenturaPark due to a collision.

"Emergency services are on scene. More info to follow." The northbound stretch reopened at 7.22am this morning (Thursday, November 7), but delays remain on approach."

Staffordshire Police have been approached for comment.
