Aldridge Musical Comedy Society (AMCS) is presenting West Side Story at the Prince of Wales theatre in Cannock.

The adaptation of Romeo and Juliet has been labelled a 'rollercoaster' event that will have you on the edge of your seats.

In one of the largest casts ever to grace an AMCS production, dozens take to the stage for a show filled with musical comradery to contrast with the heart-breaking underlying story and its tragic conclusion.

In an almost impossibly challenging double header, Sarah Beckett takes on both director and choreographer roles in along with a few cameos on the stage itself.

Ms Beckett said: “West Side Story has been my favourite show since I was young and I am so proud of everyone in the production who has bought my ideas to life.

"It has been the most challenging shows I have done, but also one of the most enjoyable.”

Musical director has been taken on by AMCS' managing director Mark Bayliss in his first undertaking of the Leonard Bernstein.

He added: “West Side Story is one of the most challenging musicals in the history of musical theatre, and certainly my biggest yet.

“The show is musically genius from the get go with little hidden melodies within the score from start to finish to symbolise the two main types of music featured in the show.”

AMCS currently has a core of over thirty members and is always on the lookout for new recruits of all ages.

The society rehearses in Aldridge every Wednesday, and in addition to two shows a year, also stages concerts for charities and other good causes.

AMCS is already planning its next two productions with Sleeping Beauty the Pantomime planned for November 2018.

The following May AMCS will grace the stage with Me and My Girl (2019) for the third time in their history.

West Side Story is staged until Saturday and starts at 7.30pm each night at the Prince of Wales Theatre, Cannock.

Tickets are available from AMCS ticket secretary Stuart Brooke on 07984 465400 or the Prince of Wales Box Office (01543 578762)
