Lockdown companions captured by talented teen
An animation student has turned her talents to pet portraiture and is bringing smiles to many happy customers as the pandemic continues.
Amanda Bourne from Eccleshall started up her business as an artist-for-hire back in the first national lockdown.
Specialising in pencil portraits and watercolours of our animal companions, Amanda’s company – AHB Creations – is now taking around one commission every week from people looking to immortalise their pet pals.
Amanda, aged 19, only began her venture after a friend contacted her with an out-of-the-blue commission.
“It all started when my friend asked her to draw her dog for her sister,” she said. “I posted this piece on Instagram along with another one, and all of a sudden people started messaging me with requests.
“I was quite shocked – I never thought people would want a drawing by me. But all of a sudden I was doing one for somebody each week.”
Currently studying from home towards her degree in Animation and Visual Effects, Amanda is pleased to have had her new business to occupy her time between her university work, and is delighted it has also brought a bit of needed joy to those who have commissioned her.
She says people have become more aware of the importance of pets during lockdown and are looking for a permanent momento to hang up in their home.
And she says the feedback she has received has encouraged her to keep up the pastime.
“I’ve had people cry because they love their drawings so much,” she said.
“People have been so lovely about them, it’s been really nice.
“It’s helped give me something else to do during the lockdowns we have had to endure.
“And it’s been lovely to help bring a smile to people’s faces at the moment when they really need it.”
