Wolf to appear at Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival

The Wolf of Baghdad is an audio-visual project created by London-based musician Carol Isaacs, also known as cartoonist The Surreal McCoy.

It is based on her Iraqi-Jewish family’s memories of their lost homeland.

As well as being a graphic memoir to be published by Myriad Editions in early 2020, it is also presented as a motion comic: a semi-animated slideshow that is accompanied by an ensemble of musicians performing repertoire of the era and projected onto a film screen.

For this event at Shrewsbury Cartoon Festival a short excerpt of the work will be shown, followed by an illustrated talk on the making of the audio-visual project. Exploring themes of displacement, refugees, identity and belonging, it will be followed by a Q&A session.

This will take place on Saturday at 11am at Shrewsbury Central in Claremont Street.

As cartoonist The Surreal McCoy, her work has been published in the New Yorker, Sunday Times, Spectator, Readers’ Digest and other unlikely places.

Her work is also featured in The Inking Woman, 250 Years of Women Cartoon and Comic Artists in Britain, published by Myriad Editions.

As a musician Carol has worked with many international artists including Sinead O’Connor, Indigo Girls and Ahmed Mukhtar.
