The Aston-born Prince of Darkness had a tram named after him in Birmingham in May last year. The ceremony took place outside New Look in Corporation Street where a new stop had recently been installed.

Standing before a huge crowd of fans the star said: "It's good to be here, thank you very much. Being with Sabbath has been an incredible journey.

"Once a Brummie, always a Brummie."

The pre-recorded voice-overs, announcing stops and when the trams are due to depart, are being used on the trams today to mark BBC Music Day.

The Black Sabbath frontman was filmed saying the following, before recording his messages:

"Right. Listen up you lot - Ozzy here. And I'll be taking over the Midland Metro trams for BBC Music Day.

"So hold on tight all you hell-raisers and I'll see you on the other side.
