The incredible projections are part of the first of four planned 'Great Exhibitions' at the historic landmark.

Called ‘Earth: What a Wonderful World?', the exhibition looks how the natural world has influenced architecture throughout history, particularly that of the cathedral itself.

Visitors have been enjoying the powerful light and sound shows seated on artificial grass in the grand surroundings of the cathedral’s Nave, adding to the captivating experience.

The installation runs until Monday.

The cathedral’s artist-in-residence Peter Walker said: “The exhibition is truly bringing the great outdoors inside the cathedral and making visitors contemplate the aesthetic beauty of nature and how it has informed the world that we live in.

“I would urge visitors to come along and see the exhibition for themselves – they really won’t believe their eyes when they do.”

Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, adds: “The Great Exhibition is an important event that raises awareness of both art and nature in the public consciousness, as well as the profile of the cathedral.

“We are incredibly excited to be hosting the exhibition and invite people who haven’t had a chance to experience it yet to join us on this breathtaking journey across earth, sea and sky.”

Local schoolchildren have also been involved with the exhibition by producing their very own art installation – consisting of hundreds of painted tiles – which guides visitors on a vibrant journey through the building by highlighting the close relationship between nature and architecture.

Alex Nicholson-Ward, schools and learning manager for the cathedral, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with so many schools on this project. Schools of all kinds from across the region have been involved, and the result of their work has been truly astonishing.

“The children have thoroughly enjoyed the process of planning and illustrating their tiles. The project has not only given them the opportunity to engage with the idea of stewardship of the Earth, but also the importance of creative expression and design.”

This week screenings of the Disney films WALL-E and The Jungle Book also took place at the cathedral.

The installation has been created by Luxmuralis – the team behind the popular projections on the face of the Cathedral in recent years.

The art and light show are ticket-only events. Tickets can be bought online at www.lichfield-cathedral.org. Advance admission to the installation is £3 per person (£2 for under 16s), while tickets bought on the door are £5 per person (£3 for those under 16).
