Although the actual 'parts' that define the Black Country have been met with some controversy, most agree that it is made up of the majority of the four metropolitan boroughs - Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton.

Many people living in the Black Country are fiercely proud of where they come from, and what better way to flaunt it than with a local accent. It shows where you come from - in this case, a place of incredible history and culture.

Some people - usually those from outside of the West Midlands - often confuse the Black Country dialect with the Brummie accent due to the upwards inflection; the high note at the end of a sentence.

But the Black Country very much has an individual and unique dialect, it's not just a 'strong accent'.

People living in Birmingham often refer to Black Country folk as Yam Yams because they say ‘yow am’ or ‘yow’m’ instead of ‘you are’, whereas the term ‘Brummie’, used to refer to people from Birmingham, is derived from ‘Brummagem’ – traditional Black Country speak for Birmingham.

Photographer Tim and I went out to Dudley town centre to ask the people what they thought.

Some reckon that Dudley is the epicentre of the Black Country but that depends on who you ask - after all, the neighbouring boroughs are just as involved.

I asked some passersby in Market Place where they think has the most hearty accent in the Black Country - some think Tipton, others reckon Wolverhampton.

Local man Cliff said straight up: "Tip'n. Or Tipton to everyone else!"

College pals Jack Harris, Harry Westwood, and Alistair Drake, all agreed on the same place.

The A-level students from Dudley College scratched their heads before Harry said what they were all thinking: "Probably some parts of Wolverhampton have the strongest accent. Not in a bad way!"

Friends Sarah Martin and Rachel Richards had just been shopping in the town centre. While Rachel is a local Walsall girl, Sarah moved to Wren's Nest from Newcastle a year ago.

"We do know how strong the accent is around here," 36-year-old Rachel said.

Newcastle-born Rachel added: "I'm just about still adapting, just like they're adapting to my language as well!"

Baggies fan Keith had no idea, but agreed that it would 'probably be Tipton'.
