As it was for most industries, 2020 was a cruel and frustrating year for film.

Filled with delay, postponement, and cancellation, it was a year that studios and fans alike would rather forget.

It didn’t come without its moments of glory however – a testament to the movie world and its resolve. Christopher Nolan’s Tenet made it through to be the only real big-hitter to be screened at cinemas this summer. Disney’s live action Mulan and George Clooney sci-fi stunner, The Midnight Sky, arrived direct to our doors via our favourite streaming platforms.

2020 could have been worse, but in 2021 we hope for better. Happily, better could well be on the horizon.

Things are still going to be touch and go for a while, and film releases will doubtlessly continue to be affected for some time. But for now we can look with excitement to a number of gems currently scheduled to hit our screens in the next 12 months that will hopefully arrive as planned. Here are ten of those that our breath is most bated for. Lights, camera, action...

Black Widow

Finally the leading lady of the Marvel Cinematic Universe gets to be an actual leading lady!

You left it far too long to give her the spotlight Marvel Studios, but we trust that will mean this flick will be worth the wait.

Set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow will see Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff confronting her past, which is set to feature Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, a fellow Soviet spy and another ‘Black Widow’, and David Harbour of Stranger Things fame as their unlikely father figure.

Black Widow is currently set for release on May 7.

No Time To Die

Mr Bond, we’ve been expecting you... for quite a while now to be honest mate...

The wait however will surely pay off as Daniel Craig straps on his Walther once more to face off against Rami Malek as the sinister Safin.

With Lea Seydoux and Ana de Armas also starring, this is set to be an adventure and a half.

No Time To Die is currently set for release on April 2.

The 355

Who said the new Bond flick was the only spy film we’re excited about? The 355 is set to feature an all-female espionage team comprising Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Penélope Cruz, Diane Kruger and Bingbing Fan, who join forces in pursuit of a top-secret weapon. Quite the cast and definitely one for the hit list.

The 355 is currently set for release on January 14.

Cinderella

A timeless tale that there can never be too many re-tellings of...

In this latest version, it’s Camila Cabello who shall go to the ball in a feminist, musical take on the classic story, with Billie Porter as her Fairy Godmother and Idina Menzel as her stepmother. Quite a lot of sing-along fun to be had here we think!

Cinderella is currently set for release on February 5.

Respect

Find out what it means to her... Jennifer Hudson in her most anticipated role to date as she steps into the shoes of Aretha Franklin.

This biopic comes after the Queen of Soul’s death in 2018, and big moments that will send a shiver down your spine are predicted.

Respect is currently set for release on August 13.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie

Set to be a feel-good delight this film, based on a West End musical, follows the journey of 16-year-old Jamie New, a Sheffield lad who aspires to be a drag queen.

Despite the disapproval of school teachers, bullies and even his dad, Jamie is driven to seize the day. The one that everybody is indeed talking about, and we can’t wait.

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is currently set for release on February 26.

Raya And The Last Dragon

Long ago, in the fantasy world of Kumandra, humans and dragons lived together in harmony. However, when sinister monsters known as the Druun threatened the land, the dragons sacrificed themselves to save humanity. Now, 500 years later, those same monsters have returned, and it’s up to a lone warrior to track down the last dragon and stop the Druun for good.

Searching for a new Disney heroine? Let the voice of Kelly Marie Tran be your saviour. This one is set to be a heart-warmer.

Raya And The Last Dragon is currently set for release on March 16.

The King’s Man

The latest in the Kingsman series, and a prequel that will feature some top British talent including the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Arterton.

A collection of history’s very worst villains have gathered to wipe out millions, and a hero is urgently needed. Also starring Matthew Goode, Charles Dance and Harris Dickinson, this spiffing yarn will certainly be worth a look.

The King’s Man is currently set for release on March 12.

Promising Young Woman

Nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be – she’s wickedly clever, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night.

Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs from her past. A tale of vengeance starring Carey Mulligan, Bo Burnham, Adam Brody and Laverne Cox, this one looks promising indeed.

It is set for release on February 12.

A Quiet Place Part II

Following the terrifying 2018 original, the Abbott family must now face the terrors of the outside world as they fight for survival in silence.Emily Blunt returns for what is set to be a rather scary sequel. One for the horror fans and a sure fire treat if such flicks are your bag.

It is currently set for release on April 23.
