His extensive catalogue of varying songs and outstanding live talent drew fans from all ages and walks of life too; the eclectic crowd filling The Genting Arena to the brim. And the young rocker couples, children, and 70-somethings alike knew the words to almost every song in the icon’s two-hour set.

As anyone who has seen Bryan live before will know, the now 58-year-old star barely comes up for air during his shows; performing hit after spectacular hit with effortless talent - and last night was most certainly no different.

“Birmingham, it’s great to be back again,” beamed Bryan.

“We’ve played here quite a few times. We’ve got a long show tonight and we’ve got a lot of music to play.”

Bryan Adams brought his Ultimate Tour to Birmingham

Backed by a band of four musicians - each of them dressed in the same way as Bryan, donning blue jeans, dark blazers and white shirts - the singer/songwriter kicked off his show with new number Ultimate Love, before launching into an array of beloved hits including a lively, rousing rendition of Can’t Stop This Thing We Started; a superbly gritty and thrilling performance of Run To You; and a gorgeous rendition of Heaven - on which the crowd sang the opening verse.

And on each and every number Bryan’s trademark gravelly, yet strong, wide-ranging vocals were outstanding and faultless. Unlike most singers this fine Canadian export truly sounds better live than he does on record.

Summer of ‘69 and The Only Thing That Looks Good On Me Is You also featured - much to fans’ delight - as well as a selection of Bryan’s best-loved ballads, including (Everything I Do) I Do It For You, Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?, I’m Ready, and Straight From The Heart.

Our only (very minor) complaint was that the set included less rock material than usual; though that is very much down to personal taste - and the icon still played a superbly mixed array of songs.

“I’ve had a great night - thank you for coming out,” gushed Bryan - and for the thousands of fans packed into the NEC venue, the feeling was very much mutual.

He then drew the excellent evening to a close with a stunning performance of All For Love, on which the room was lit up by the crowd’s phone lights alone.

An impressive treat, as ever; the One Night Love Affair truly leaving fans on Cloud Number Nine.
