The Stafford Grammar School director of music, Gavin Lamplough, and other musicians including Great Wyrley’s Darren Selby, Tamworth-based Andrew Dickinson and Halesowen pair Mark Sharman and Nicola Redhead will be able to tick this unusual challenge off their bucket lists.

An incredible £5,100 has been raised for Cancer Research UK after they took on the tireless challenge across 2,000 miles to play in every city for 10 minutes, which is over a grand more than what they set out to raise.

The exact time they managed to finish it in was 61.5 hours.

He said: "It was brutal. “We never thought it would be so tough. We were literally going non-stop for three days to keep to our schedule and hit the target, but the generosity of people along the way was really humbling."

The members of Salvation Army's Birmingham Citadel Band graced the likes of Wembley and The Oval with their trumpets, trombone, horn and tuba.

The Match of the Day, Grandstand and Test Match Special tunes were included in their line-up, along with hymns and anthems which are linked with particular cities, clubs or sports.

They also visited the Molineux in Wolverhampton, Lichfield Rugby Club, Edgbaston, Bristol City FC, York racecourse and went as far as Truro, Norwich, Portsmouth and Carlisle in their travels.

He said: “We have loads of memories, but one of the highlights was arriving at Brighton Football Club in the dark at 3am and being welcomed by a security guard, who turned on the floodlights and gave us a tour of the ground.

"We then performed a concert on the pitch just for him, which included a rendition of ‘Sussex by the Sea’. It was surreal.

“And it was also lovely to feel the community spirit of many of the smaller clubs and venues, where there was a real sense of appreciation of what we were trying to achieve. We feel very fortunate that we stumbled across a fund raising idea which captured the imagination and generosity of the public."

Five years ago they visited all 92 football grounds in the top 4 divisions of English football and raised £8,000 for Cancer Research. Overall they have raised over £13,000 across the two challenges.
