Oldbury childhood sweethearts tuk tuk a chance on a new business
Luxury limos, converted ambulances, fire engines and horse-drawn carriages.
We’ve seen it all on our roads and now you can add the tiny tuk-tuk to the list.
Snapped up on ebay and transformed by Oldbury couple Sandip Gillar and Dal Gillar, the all-electric Ride My Tuk Tuk, will offer customers the chance to travel to events in three-wheeled style.
The cute customised yellow and black vehicle, which came all the way from China, can hit speeds of up to 30 miles per hour and amazingly has space for five people.
And to top it off it is environmentally-friendly travelling 60 miles before it needs to be charged up again for four or five hours.
The couple decided to start the company whilst Sandip was on maternity leave waiting to give birth to her now four-month-old daughter Ava.
Mrs Gillar, 29, said: “Everyone absolutely loves it, for many people it brings back memories they have of India or Pakistan.
“It brings back memories for the older generation and the younger ones love the uniqueness of it.”
Sandip, a senior marketing campaign co-ordinator for Poundland came up with the idea. She discussed it with husband Dal Gillar who took to web to buy the vehicle – more often seen on the roads of India or Pakistan. They can fetch up to £3,000 on the internet.
Mr Gillar, 29, a special vehicle operation team leader for Jaguar Landrover, worked on the flat-pack vehicle in his garage long after shifts working on cars for the likes of world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and other customers.
The pair have now launched a website ridemytuktuk.com for people to book the tuk-tuk for everything from weddings to proms.
At the moment it can only be used as a photo booth with the couple having to transport it on the back of a truck. But they are in the process of getting the paperwork done to allow it to hit the road soon.
The couple charge £700 per session and have already been booked for a number of weddings and birthdays and have plans to expand the business.
