The bird has raised its head to catch some rays on what must have been a rare sunny day this summer.

A darting dragonfly was just inches away from the heron's beak as it struck a pose at Sandwell Valley RSPB Reserve.

The photo was framed by Darren Littlehales from Birmingham.

As well as herons, Sandwell Valley is also home to various other birds – including blue tits, great tits, greenfinches, bullfinches and parakeets.

This year, RSPB bosses said there have also been sightings of a great spotted woodpecker, as well as sedge warblers and reed warblers.
