RAF Cosford Air Show 2017: Road closures announced

Around 60,000 are expected to descend on the Shropshire airbase for the annual show.

Past years have seen chaos, with lengthy queues on surrounding roads.

But organisers say the situation has improved more recently after bringing in specialists to plan ahead.

Roads in the area are expected to be will be busy from 6am on Sunday until 9pm.

Road signs have been set up to help drivers find their way – and warning them where they must avoid.

A number of restrictions will be in place throughout the day to try and help keep traffic flowing.

Long Lane, Neachley Lane and Worcester Road will be made one way towards the airfield, with the direction being reversed at around midday.

A464 and A41 will see a temporary clearway imposed, meaning that vehicles will not be able to stop or wait in the area.

Newport Road will be limited to access by local residents only, and stopped and waiting will not be permitted.

Kennel Lane and Bowling Green Lane will be closed to non-resident traffic.

The A464, between Shifnal and the A41, will be closed to traffic between 1.45pm and 2.45pm on Sunday, although the Horns of Boningale pub will remain open.

Clive Elliott, director of the RAF Cosford Airshow, said: "Our traffic management plan worked well in 2016 and we intend to repeat that success.

"Road closures and one way systems are the same, with the addition of a closure on the A464 between 1.45pm and 2.45pm. This is to enable two display acts to shift their axis to the West and avoid aerobatic overflight of Albrighton.

"This air show is a fantastic day out for all the family. Tickets are only available in advance and are going fast."

As well as the road closures, a number of businesses in the area will be shut.

Chief Inspector Keith Gee of West Mercia Police said: "We are expecting the show to be a fun day out for the family. We will be on standby to support the event organisers should any issues occur.

"People heading to the show are asked to please allow plenty of time to get there. The number of vehicles travelling to the airfield will undoubtedly cause some disruption but we hope this will be kept to a minimum."

David Austin Roses, Albrighton Cricket Club, and the Albrighton and Woodland Hunt fields will be closed for the day. Chapel Farm Park and View will also be closed.

The theme this year is International Co-operation and aircraft confirmed to appear from the museum include the British Aerospace Experimental Aircraft Programme, the BAe Harrier GR9A and the Hawker Hurricane IIc. will be rolled out from the museum hangars and exhibited outside on the airfield, forming part of a display of aircraft which are manufactured in multinational environments.
