Power giant Alstom brings 146 new jobs to Stafford
More than 140 jobs have been created at Staffordshire power giant Alstom. The company, which already employs 2,000 people in the region, is offering a total of 146 positions at its plant in Stafford.
It comes as the firm today revealed UK sales of almost £900 million in the past quarter, creating 500 new jobs nationwide. The jobs in Stafford include project managers, engineers, technicians and other support staff. The success is partly down to a £400m deal by its Stafford Grid staff to supply power in India.
Steve Burgin, president of Alstom UK, said: "Given the general global economic conditions, Alstom in the UK is doing extremely well, especially as much of our success is happening in overseas markets.
"Our Stafford site is a group centre of excellence for high-voltage direct current activity and has won a very large contract for an energy superhighway in India, whilst our Rugby power team has successfully won the majority of a major contract to overhaul and refurbish a large South African power station.
"Those contract wins, and these results, show that engineering is not only alive and well in the UK but also reaching out to win orders from around the world.
"And through our bases in Stafford, where we employ around 2,000 people, and Rugby, where we're no less important to the town's economy with 700 people, we're making a real difference in terms of skills, training and engineering."
The news come hot on the heels of another jobs boom at Alstom in November last year.
It created 203 positions at Stafford and 165 in its Alstom Transport division, which has a base in Jones Road, Oxley, Wolverhampton.
At the time, it recorded half-year sales of £600m, which were slightly down compared to last year.
The French parent group had total orders of £9.7 billion, up 19 per cent, for the half year. Sales were up four per cent to £7.7bn and net income rose 11 per cent to £323.2m.
