A waste firm today revealed it will invest £1.5 million into its base and create six new jobs in the first phase of investment.

KB Extruders Limited is planning to expand its waste transfer station at Cornwall Road in Smethwick. The firm already processes cardboard, paper and polythene, which is then shipped to its base at Witton to be made into packaging.

Under plans, bosses at the company will expand the operation at the Smethwick base by processing other plastics.

Managing director Ali Ahmed said the investment will see the company expand over five years.

He added: "By expanding our transfer station we can undertake more work at the other bases. This is a long term project that will create at least six posts in Smethwick in this first stage."

In a planning application submitted to Sandwell Council, Mr Ahmed says he wants to provide new access to the site of Cornwall Road and build new storage areas for the plastic waste. He will also expand loading areas and bays.

Council planners have received one objection to the plan from a neighbouring resident raising concerns about potential fire risks.
